The unique Barbarossa Frescoes of the Great Hall and the baroque park make Gamburg Castle and Gardens a cultural heritage of Europan importance.

Gamburg Castle, overviewing the Tauber and the Romantic Road, was a fiefdom of the archbishop of Mainz and the residence of the noble familiy of Gamburg in the 12th century. Its originally Romanesque palace is unique in Europe. The Barbarossa Frescoes in its main hall are regarded as the oldest secular wall paintings north of the Alps (around 1200). These only remaining original paintings of a medieval Great Hall show large scenes of the crusade of the Emperor Frederick I. and among other things one of the earliest German inscriptions. They border magnificent Romanesque double arches.
The castle itself has never been destroyed and was saved by the famous knight Götz von Berlichingen during the German Peasants War. The castle has been a private property of noble families since 1546 and is still inhabited today. Its even supposed to be haunted by more than 21 ghosts!
The keep was transformed into a bunker during World War II to store the files concerning communist resistance groups.
The baroque park with botanic rarities and „the nymphs fountain“ in its centre is an integral part of the castle and, as such, unique in Germany. In season, palms and other exotic plants at the café inside the castles courtyard, adorned with statues, exude a Mediterranean flair.
The chapel and the armorial room are used for marriages.
Parts of the complex can be rented for receptions and conferences.
Besides the regular tours the castle also offers various events and courses.
